About the bridge
The Poinsett bridge was built in 1820 and is considered to be the oldest bridge in the state of South Carolina. It is named after Joel Poinsett, a prominent early resident of Greenville and a U.S. ambassador to Mexico at the time. The bridge was part of the State Road that connected Charleston and Columbia with the North Carolina mountain communities into Tennessee.
