Ralph G. Kendrick Boardwalk at Dwarf Cypress Stand
The Ralph G. Kendrick boardwalk is a boardwalk that extends out and over a unique dwarf cypress field in Tate’s Hell State Forest along Florida’s Forgotten Coast. For some reason, the cypress trees in this area have never grown taller than 6-15 feet tall despite being over 300-years old. This is unique as cypress trees typically average 100 feet tall. While there might be numerous theories why these cypress trees were dwarfed, no one truly knows the answer. What is even more mysterious is that these dwarf cypresses are genetically similar to other pond cypresses in the area, and seeds from these dwarfed trees will grow to the normal height if planted elsewhere.
